Medusa and The Ellen Show

Something really bizarre happened at Texas Teen Book Festival in Austin on October 1st.

Medusa Banner

Those of you who have met me at events know that I have a banner behind me with the Medusa on it. You also know that I ask people who come by my table if they’d like to pick a Medusa card. I created a deck based on the gods, goddesses, heroes, and mythological creatures from Greek mythology to use for pseudo tarot readings just for fun.

So this police officer approached the table. Anytime a police officer struts straight up to to me, the first thing I wonder is what have I done wrong. But this officer looked straight up at my Medusa banner and then showed me his arm. Minotaur FlashcardBeneath his sleeve was a beautiful tattoo of the Medusa with his daughter’s face on it.

Well, as amazing as his tattoo was, that wasn’t the bizarre part. As I do with everyone, I asked Officer Sexton if he would like to pick a card–just for fun, because I don’t really believe in that kind of thing, I said, as I always do.

So I was holding about 70 cards in my hand, face down, and only one of them was the Medusa.

Guess which one he picked.

MedusaYep. He picked the Medusa.

Now, maybe I DO believe in that kind of thing.

One more thing before I let you go…

If you’re a fan of Ellen Degeneres, you might enjoy my impression of her in this video my son helped me make:

The Self-Publishing for Success All-Day Seminar with Eva Pohler

Self-Publishing for Success All-Day Seminar Banner

Eva Pohler is an Amazon bestselling author of teen fantasy and psychological thrillers. After publishing her first book three years ago, Eva went from a floundering newbie with little experience and very few sales to a successful author climbing her way up the bestseller lists. Through trial and error and after consuming several books and classes on marketing, Eva has finally figured out what works and what doesn’t work and has recently been averaging one hundred sales per day–one-fourth of which are box sets that sell for $9.99 each. Her numbers grow daily, and she’s excited to share what she’s learned so that others can join her on the climb toward success as they make their dreams come true, too.

Eva’s twenty-three years experience in teaching writing and literature at universities, along with her experience in presenting on panels to authors at conferences, has helped her to develop and execute a one-day course for new and established authors of all genres, both fiction and non-fiction, wanting to take their careers to the next level.

The Self-Publishing for Success All-Day Seminar with Eva Pohler will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 20011 Park Ranch, San Antonio, Texas, 78259.

Learn how to successfully promote and sell your ebooks by driving thousands of readers to your titles.

Here’s the schedule from Eva:

7:45: arrive
8:00: First I’ll give you an overview of the complete marketing system that has enabled me to consistently sell an average of 100 books a day and to remain in the top 20 in my categories on Amazon. I’ll briefly outline the concepts and then I’ll dig into them, one by one.
8:15: We’ll get on Amazon to look at categories; I’ll also show you a program called the Kindle Samurai, which helps test key words and phrases. We’ll test some for each of you. You can all log into your KDP and other dashboards and change your keywords and categories to optimize your discoverability.
9:00: I want to say a few things about pricing strategies and word count.
9:15: I’ll tell you how to create a long-term marketing plan with considerations for target audience, branding, genre, series potential, spin-offs, cross promotion, and an effective publication schedule using the loss leader and box sets to increase sales. I want to talk to you about how creating series, companion novels, and collections in a single genre is easier to market than stand-alone novels and multiple genres.
9:30: I’ll cover the funnel (loss leader) and why it’s you VERY BEST marketing strategy. I’ll cover how to use it to your advantage, by submitting to free and paid promo sites regularly, including Bookbub, and by using Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter advertising (which we’ll get into more after lunch).
9:45: The magnet that helps you build your platform and how to place it on your website, in your funnel, as a pinned Twitter post, on your Facebook author page, and in your Facebook and other advertising. I’ll show you how to use Hootsuite to automate tweets. I’ll show you how to use Rafflecopter or Kingsumo giveaways to build your platform quickly. I’ll also spend a few minutes showing you how to optimize your website with a plugin and with a weekly or monthly blog.
10:15 I’ll show you how to create a landing page for your magnet that is tied to your newsletter service (I’ll use mailchimp as an example). You can download this free plugin and set up your landing page while I walk you through it.
11:00: Next I’ll go over newsletter dos and don’ts and talk to you about the power of the newsletter. If you don’t already have one, I will walk you through how to set up one for free using Mailchimp. It is VITAL that you have a newsletter. I will also briefly discuss texting services and the secret Facebook group/fan club. We want to maximize our direct contact with our readers, since we can’t rely on Amazon and other companies to promote us.
12:00 Lunch
1:00 I’ll walk you through how to create graphics using your covers, iStock, and picmonkey. I want everyone to have a good Facebook header, magnet advert, Facebook ad graphic, Instagram ad graphic, and Twitter ad graphic before you leave!
2:00 Next I’ll walk you through how to set up a Facebook ad. We’ll cover what you need to include in your ad copy and how best to optimize it for the best chances of success (audience targeting, ad placement, reach, etc.). I’ll show you how to split-test the ads to find the best ones. I’ll also tell you how to monitor your ads so you can kill the low-performing ads, scale up the high-performing ads, and alter them if they start going stale.
3:00 I want to show you how eventually you should create ads for your funnel, your magnet, and box sets. I want to show you my own progress in sales and rank since implementing these strategies. I also want to show you some of my ads and discuss the comments, and how I use the comments in the ads to increase the success of my ads.
4:00 Then I’ll show you how to create an Instagram ad and a Twitter ad.
4:30 I also want to make sure you all know how to become affiliates of Amazon, iBooks, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords so that you can make more money with affiliate links.
4:45 And to piggy-back onto that, I want to show you how you can make a little more with merchandising.
5:00 If I’ve really managed to cover everything and answer your questions by five, we will end; otherwise, we can go on until six, if needed.

You will also get a packet of materials outlining Eva’s presentation and including extra helpful resources.

Most comparable online courses cost anywhere from $200-$600 each, and you don’t get the added benefit of a face-to-face, in-person instructor who can answer your publishing questions and guide you toward success. For a limited time, Eva is offering this course at a major discount, since it is new. Although she will be offering the all-day seminar again in the future, it won’t be at the current price. Seating is limited, so if you know you want to enroll, you might want to do it now.

Early Registration is now through October 31st: $100
Regular Registration: November 1st-November 12th: $140
Registration closes no later than midnight on November 12th, or as soon as the course is sold out (the community center has limited seating). No walk ins.

First, sign up by clicking here.

Then, please send payment via Paypal to eva@evapohler.com.

We can’t wait to see you there! Be ready to get this dream started!

Back from Penned Con 2015

Penned Con Amy and Rick 2015What a whirlwind of fun! I just got back from St. Louis, where I attended Penned Con 2015, hosted by the amazing Rick and Amy Miles. They raised over $10,000 for Action for Autism last weekend, which is why Rick is dressed in a Superman onesie and tiara!

Here I am at my booth with the very thoughtful gift bag from Action for Autism. It contained samples of many local favorite foods and drinks.

Penned Con my booth 2015

The event kicked off with Teen Day on Thursday. One of my teen Penned Con Kali 2015readers and her mom drove five hours to attend. I was thrilled to meet them in person! Kali and Mary truly made this event even more special to me! Kali and I had fun with the photo booth later at the ball.

Penned Con Rehearsal with LP 2015Thursday night, the authors met up to rehearse the flash mob dance we planned to surprise the attendees with at the ball. Thankfully, L. P. Dover knew what she was doing!

Friday and Saturday, I had an absolute blast meeting readers!

Penned Con Shannon Keith 2015

Penned Con Julie 2015Among my preorders were Shannon Keith, Julie Counts, and Dana Stusse.

PEnned Con Dana 2015

We also had a delicious author lunch on Friday in one of the ballrooms with this beautiful city view.

Penned Con View 2015

Other readers that came to see me were Renae and Raquel, both members of my street team. We had a fun time in the photo booth at the ball after having dinner with Alison Pensy and Susan Burdorf at the Spaghetti Factory.

Penned Con Divas 2015

Alison and Susan and I managed to kidnap Mark Coker, founder of Smashwords, for a little more fun in the photo booth.

Penned Con Mark Coker 2015

I was excited to meet new readers, too. I happily sold a lot of books Penned Con Greeks 2015and signed people up for my newsletter. I lured them to my table with my Medusa cards and Athena locket, which I raffled off. The winner of the locket was Antonia Konstantinopoulou. I’m so thrilled that the site I use to choose a winner (Random.org) chose someone Greek! I’m not sure, but I think Antonia is pictured with me here.

Penned Con with Rebekka 2015

Among other new readers was a kindred spirit and big fan of Greek mythology, Rebekka. Here we are on the red carpet together.

Rebekka was one of five readers who bought all six books in my Gatekeeper’s Saga at the event. I can’t wait to hear what she thinks of it.

Penned Con LK 2015

Author L.K. Gardner-Griffie wins (in my opinion) for best outfit at the ball. I had a blast getting to know her better when she and I joined a group of authors at Maggie O’Brien’s for dinner Thursday.

But here are some photos of some of my other favorite outfits:

The flash mob dance to “Shake it Off” was the climax of the weekend. Here’s a link to a video on Facebook taken by Kelly Walker.

And here’s one more photo booth pic taken with my true blue friends from last year: Amy, Eric, J.D., Alison, Raquel, Julie, Renae, me, and Susan.

Penned Con Old Group 2015

This isn’t the whole group, though. We really missed not having Auburn Wade, Tara Dawn, Amanda Kieckbusch, Angela Pratt, and Venture Cecena. There were many others, too.

Thanks again to Rick and Amy Miles and their staff and volunteers for making this amazing event possible. And a big thank you to Kelsey Kukal-Keeton for sharing her photography. Most of the photos I posted here were taken by her.
